What do you do when life knocks you to the pavement? How do you handle the difficulties and disappointments of life? Where is God when life hurts, anyway? Indeed, if you live long enough, life will happen to you. Life is, in many ways, wounding, and yet we have a choice as to how we will handle what happens to us. In today’s culture, it is common to run from the pain of life, anesthetizing ourselves in a variety of ways or employing the many forms of denial and avoidance to keep from being overwhelmed by our suffering.

In her new book, Sitting Strong: Wrestling With The Ornery God, Jeanie Miley suggests that the biblical character Job shows us that those things which terrify and traumatize us can be carried, understood and suff ered in a way that can be healing and transforming, liberating and empowering. The “Job experiences” of life can be the very places in which we encounter God; the things that we think will break us can be used by God to form and shape us spiritually. The book of Job reveals that, in the middle of our deepest pain, God is at work, attempting to bring about good.
