At Year's End
Last week my good friend Travis Perry died in San Angelo, Texas. He was 83, and he had lived a good, long life, but as the hours of this year wind down, I find myself wishing I could have just one more conversation with him.
Trav and Gloria played a big role in my life when I was a young adult, expecting my first child and trying to figure out which end of the world was up and which was down. They were unbelievably kind and loving to my husband and me when we first moved to San Angelo in 1971, opening their hearts and their home to us with an uncommon friendliness and responsiveness. For the rest of my life, I will be grateful for their hospitality, warmth and generosity.

Christmas Musing
Our youngest daughter Amy was two-and-a-half when we purchased the Nativity set that would become a focal point of our family's Advent and Christmas celebration throughout the girls' growing-up years. We made a big deal of setting it up on a table in our entry hall, letting the girls place the figures in the stable. The last figure to be placed, of course, was the Baby Jesus.
At the same time Amy was just the age for playing with the little Fisher Price people that came in doll houses, barns and other containers meant for preschoolers. She also had a collection of little people called Weebles, and part of our challenge was retrieving the little people from under the beds or the back yard at the end of the day.

Advent Musing - Day 26
Call to Worship -- Christmas Eve Service
River Oakes Baptist Church
Houston, Texas
We gather together again in this sacred space....
We who have joined the ancients in crying out,
"O Come, O Come, Emmanuel........"
We who long for love and grace-
We who thirst and are hungry have
plead with God, Come....Emmanuel, come!
